A NEWLY refurbished playground that school children in Crewe helped design is set for its official reopening next week.

Children at Hungerford Road Primary School worked with Cheshire East Council and WREN, a not-for-profit business that awards grants to benefit the lives of people living close to landfill sites.

Pupils were involved in designing the play area on Macon Meadows and in selecting equipment.

Cllr David Topping, Cheshire East Council’s Cabinet member for service commissioning, said: “Officers at Ansa, the Council’s operating company for grounds maintenance and streetscape services, have worked hard to put together funding to enable the facilities to be brought up to the latest European standards.

“The improvements will enable all children to get much more enjoyment from this play area, while affording the safety which will always be our priority for the residents of Cheshire East.”

The park features a cantilever swing fitted with a basket seat that children can lie in, a slide wide enough for children to go down with a carer and two spring animals fitted with back supports.

Traditional swings with cradle and flat seats have also been fitted along with a rocking rockette, climbing frame and see-saw.

Additional funding for the refurbishments came from a section 106 agreement with the developer of a former petrol station on Hungerford Road in Crewe.

The official reopening of the play area will take place on Tuesday, February 3, at 11.30am.
