ODD socks are being collected and imaginations revved up ready for a day of challenges to raise awareness of Down's Syndrome.

Cheshire Down's Syndrome Support Group (CDSSG) is appealing for individuals, groups, schools and businesses to join in the fun on World Down's Syndrome Awareness Day on Saturday, March 21.

Last year people from across the county took part in challenges based on the numbers 21 and three.

Davenham mum Julie Duff, organiser and volunteer, said: “March 21 is a really special date for us as it represents three copies of chromosome 21 which is unique to people with Down's Syndrome.

She added: "We are thrilled that schools from across the county have continued to support us as well as local businesses.

"Cheshire Gymnastics are asking their members to take part in challenges and Cheshire Seahorse are swimming three miles involving 21 members.

"Challenges do not have to be extreme; one simple way to get involved could be to hang a pair of different socks out of your car windows on March 21.”

Julie is planning to give up her three loves of chocolate, biscuits and sweets for 21 days and children from the group are planning challenges like completing 21 skateboarding tricks, playing 21 musical instruments in three minutes and dribbling an football between 21 cones in three minutes.

Other challenges include a cyclist pedalling 210 miles in three days, another cyclist pedalling 21 miles in three hours and a dieter planning to lose 21lbs in three months.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of World Down's Syndrome Awareness Day and CDSSG is celebrating with a family fun day at Macdonald Portal Hotel, in Tarporley, from noon until 4pm on March 21.

Admission is £5 for a family of up to five and entertainment includes Singing Hands and Stockley Farm. A charity golf day will also be held at Macdonald Portal Hotel on March 20.

The day includes 18 holes on the championship golf course, a putting green challenge, a hot meal at the club house, prize awards and a raffle.

The price is £120 for a team of four and to book ring Amanda on 07518 590300. To register your ideas, volunteer your time or to take on a challenge for CDDSG ring Julie on 07518 590300, email admin@cdssgroup.org.uk or visit the Facebook/CDSSgroup.
