COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard hailed Labour supporters after visiting the town on the party’s campaign trail.

Mr Izzard, 53, has been visiting constituencies across the UK this month in the build up to the General Election on May 7.

The comedian, who completed 43 marathons in 51 days for Sport Relief in 2009, took to the streets of Crewe, a marginal seat currently held by Conservatives’ Edward Timpson, to rally support.

Mr Izzard said: “It’s been great. The support was fantastic. They were cheering in the street.

“People in the street were saying they were voting Labour. In fact I don’t think I met anyone who said they were not voting Labour.

“It really shows how close it is here in Crewe and Nantwich. They call me out to constituencies that are close. I volunteered to do it for the Labour Party. Everything’s still to play for here.

“I’ve been to 37 constituencies. It’s been three weeks now. It’s like running a marathon, and I’m doing it all in high heels too.”

The comedian is making plans to stand as the Mayor of London or a Member of Parliament in the 2020 General Election.

Mr Izzard told the Guardian he decided to hold off entering politics full time due to a number of commitments, including the BBC Drama, Castles in the Sky.

He said: “I’ve spent years putting it together. I need these last four or five years. I’ve worked my backside off my whole life and I don’t want to throw it away.

“But I need to get in there and find out if I can do it. I will try like crazy. I can’t tell you I can do things just yet because I just don’t know.

“I certainly want to look to address the problem of social and affordable housing in London. It’s a big problem, and there’s no simple solution. I don’t think the Tories will solve it.”
