YOUNG cadets from Crewe have been honoured by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant at the annual presentation of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards for Cheshire.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Anna Williams, Nantwich Squadron Air Cadets, has been appointed Deputy Lieutenant’s Cadet, one of the highest honours in the Cadets, and Cadet Sergeant Scott Roberts, Cheshire Army Cadet Force, has been awarded the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit, recognised as an honour throughout the forces.

The presentations were made by David Briggs, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, at a ceremony at Chester Cathedral.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Williams, 18, is a keen sportswoman, and has participated in netball at inter-squadron and wing level.

She is also keen to get involved with community events and supports the local Royal British Legion, the Nantwich Show and volunteers at Nantwich Vets Practice.

In 2014 she participated in the national citizenship award scheme at Keele University, where she co-ordinated and executed a plan to support the local Wishing Well Charity, helping disadvantaged groups in the community by raising funds to support their work. Anna attends South Cheshire College.

Cadet Sergeant Roberts, 17, has achieved much during his time with Cheshire Army Cadets. He has passed the Senor Cadet Instructors Course and the National Cadet Leadership Course.

He is a member of the County Shooting Team and has excelled in shooting competitions across the region. He has also achieved the distinction of being the most outstanding PE student on his BTEC in physical education.

Scott is training to run a marathon in aid of Cancer Research. He also actively supports the Royal British Legion and has raised funds for the Army Benevolent fund. He also attends South Cheshire College.

Anna said: “Joining at the age of 13, the Air Cadets has given me some wonderful experiences, activities and numerous opportunities. I am overwhelmed and honoured that I’ve been selected to be the Deputy Lieutenant’s Cadet, and hope this will further develop my skills both inside and outside cadets.”

Scott said: “I’m delighted to be a part of the Army Cadets, and of such a great Company. I would like to thank all the amazing Company staff in Somme Company for making me the Cadet I am today. I am overwhelmed to receive this award.”

Colonel Mark Underhill, chief executive of the North West of England and the Isle of Man Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (NW RFCA), which runs the awards, said: “Cadet Flight Sergeant Williams is a committed and mature individual and will make an excellent ambassador as the Deputy Lieutenant’s Cadet.

“Cadet Sergeant Roberts is confident, articulate and engaging – a highly creditable example of the best of youth today, and an exemplary cadet thoroughly deserving of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit.”
