THOUSANDS of people packed into Nantwich town centre on Saturday to enjoy a whole host of entertainment at the annual extravaganza.

Nantwich kicked off festive proceedings with a spectacular lights switch on event.

Families young and old arrived in town to be welcome by an opening performance from the Nantwich musician Josh Whittaker, who wowed the audience with his own songs alongside some Christmas hits.

Chris Radford, from The Cat Community Radio, who compered the event, welcomed sponsors Applewood Independent, Weaver House Clinic and Your Repair Plumbers onto the stage.

They were joined by Rector Barry Wilson, Father Christmas, Andrew and Linda Martin, the mayor and lady mayoress of Nantwich and North West Tonight’s Beccy Meehan.

Beccy helped to warm the crowds up, before a 10 second countdown to the lights switch on, which was greeted with cheer from the crowd. An impressive musical firework display from Blitz followed.

Speaking after the switch-on, Cllr Martin said: “I was delighted to be part of tonight’s event. It was absolutely fantastic to see so many people show their support, even in the bitter cold.

“Nantwich Town Council have worked hard for weeks to stage this event and have done a fantastic job with the Christmas lights.”

Families were kept thoroughly entertained throughout the evening with live music, funfair rides, refreshment and festive stalls.

In addition, Trees Alive, Santa’s Rusty Robot and a life a larger than life Minion entertained throughout the afternoon.

Youngsters were treated to a magical performance from Elsa and Anna, a Frozen Themed duo, who also took time out for photos.

Some festive cheer was added by Nantwich Young Voices, who were followed by The Runaway Babies performing a 45 minute set of popular music.

Cllr Martin added: “I would like to thank Chris Radford for compering the event, our sponsors for their support and everyone else who was involved in making this a successful event.”
