TRIBUTES have been paid to Crewe town councillor Mike Russan, who died on Monday following a brief illness.

Mike was elected to the Crewe West ward as part of the formation of the new Crewe Town Council in April 2013. He was then re-elected in May 2015.

He had joined the council following his retirement as a long-standing French teacher at Ruskin High School.

Cllr Marilyn Houston, mayor of Crewe, said: “Mike was immensely proud to represent Crewe and had a passion for his constituents.

“He was a very well-liked and respected colleague who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with Sarah and the family at this sad time.”

Mike chaired the council’s finance and resources committee, and led on improvements made to the town’s Christmas lighting scheme and other festive activities in the town centre.

Mike has been described as a caring, active and devoted father and grandfather, who had a love of music, reading, and his favourite holiday venue France.

Cllr Benn Minshall, deputy mayor, added on Facebook: “Mike was a people person. Whether it was at home, during his years of teaching or these last few years of public service.

“He was at his happiest when those around him were happiest. He had a tremendous way of getting the very best out of people. The only time he ever looked down on anybody is when he was helping them up.

“Mike will forever be our fiercely passionate yet dignified colleague. But to those who knew him well he will forever be a well-respected and much loved friend to all.”

Further tributes have been posted online by friends and former pupils, while the family has thanked the community for its support.
