STEVE Davis says Crewe must maintain their momentum after climbing off the foot of League One.

The Alex displayed plenty of heart to record their third successive win (1-0) over high-flying Peterborough United on Tuesday night.

After seeming almost down and out two weeks ago, nine points out of nine have put them right back in it - now only in the relegation zone on goal difference.

“Results are really important to us at the moment and I’m really encouraged by that win,” explained Davis.

“It’s great credit to the players that they have worked so hard to get us into this position.

“That’s lifted us up the table and it’s very close down there.

“It’s amazing what a couple of weeks can do in football, it can change so quickly.

“Now we have to keep it going.”

Marcus Haber’s 31st minute penalty proved decisive after Michael Bostwick saw straight red for a foul on Adam Dugdale.

Crewe had chances to extend their lead in one of their best first-half displays of the season.

And although Posh improved after the break, the hosts mustered consecutive clean sheets in horrendous conditions at Gresty Road.

Jack Baldwin was also sent off for a second bookable in stoppage time.

“The lads recovered well from Saturday,” added Davis.

“They look fitter and coped well with two games in four days.

“It was hard-fought, it was difficult to play against their system so it was a chessboard type thing.

“They were very good even with 10 men.

“Brad (Inman) could and should have finished it off for us at the end but we’re earning our fortune and scrapping for it.

“I’m delighted to overcome a team of that calibre and it is a fantastic win for us.

“I’ve watched the penalty and you could clearly see that he pulls Duggy back.

“There could have been no complaints about the second red either but I’d let them talk all about that.”

Sheffield United arrive on Saturday after back-to-back wins have lifted them into the League One play-off places.

Danny Haynes should be on the bench again after the 26-year-old striker arrived from Notts County on a month’s emergency loan.

Rotherham forward Febian Brandy will also stay for a second month while Davis hopes to bring Ryan Colclough back into the first-team picture.

The 19-year old have been on the sidelines through injuries and off-the-field problems over the past year.

“It’s amazing how quickly you get forgotten in football,” added the boss.

“Now he can concentrate on the one thing he is very good at and, on his day, he’s as good as we’ve got.”
