DABBERS boss Danny Johnson questioned his side’s defensive capabilities after they crashed out of the FA Trophy to Ramsbottom United.

Goals from Tom Williams, Phil Dean and Grant Spencer put the visitors ahead, before in-form Mark Winslade pulled one back in a 3-1 defeat.

But Johnson was disappointed with the manor in which his team conceded three times.

“The free kick we have got Mat Bailey, Adam Jones in there to help us defend and Andy White has got his hands up as he switched off,” he said.

“White had a great game and we all know what he does for the team. But you can’t switch off in those situations. They get the goal and they have their tails up and have something to defend.

“For the second goal, again it’s really poor defending.”

Johnson insists his defenders are good enough to perform at this level.

“Defensively I look at us on paper and we have got a very good group of players,” he explained. “But on the pitch we are not so good.”

Johnson has this week added Nigel Deeley to his coaching staff.

“The players need to have a long look at themselves,” added the Dabbers boss. “I certainly keep having a long look at myself and keep asking what more can I do.

“I brought in Nigel Deeley to the backroom staff and he’s been great already in the way he speaks to the lads and the way he conducts himself.

“I am sure Nigel will have an impact on us and we need to stay sharp.

“We are in the league and the Cheshire Cup, and we need to move forward quite quickly.”
