FORMER Crewe Alexandra defender Wayne Goodison is confident Nantwich Town have enough quality to climb the table after joining the club this week.

The 50-year-old left Trafford to be Danny Johnson’s number two and was in the dugout against his old side on Saturday.

The sides shared a 0-0 draw and Goodison now expects to see the Weaver Stadium outfit ease away from the drop zone.

“There is enough quality in the dressing room to pick up results and certainly finish the season off comfortably,” said Goodison, who also played for Barnsley and Rochdale.

“I have known Danny a little while. We had a conversation a couple of weeks ago when I left Trafford and then another one this week.

“It seemed the right thing. He told me what he wanted me to do and it just seemed to fit with what I'm looking for at the moment.”

Goodison admits it was a weird feeling facing his former club.

“It was a bit strange and I told Danny that as well,” he added. “I have been with some of those players for four and a half years.

“They are close friends. So it’s kind of a bit of a strange one, part of me wanted them to do well as individuals. Obviously I wanted to win the game for Nantwich.”

Boss Johnson was disappointed his side failed to claim three points on Saturday, despite keeping only their second clean sheet of the season at home.

“We should be winning that game, but sometimes it doesn’t work like that,” said Johnson.

“Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem, it’s been keeping them out the other end.

“Over a season you play teams, sometimes at the right time, sometimes at the wrong time.

“They’ve just appointed Graham Heathcote and he’s a wily old owl. He’s changed their formation and the way they normally play.

It looks like he’s made them difficult to beat.”
