CREWE Alexandra could once again turn to striker Uche Ikpeazu if they get the green light from Championship outfit Watford.

The 20-year-old fans' favourite is poised to return to Gresty Road once more after another bizarre twist in his season.

All set to extend his second Alex loan stint back in January, Ikpeazu was suddenly recalled by the Hornets and sent to League One rivals Doncaster Rovers.

However the striker has failed to make an impact at the Keepmoat Stadium and with his spell cut short, he may be back in south Cheshire before this month’s deadline.

Boss Steve Davis will be keeping his options open after a lack of funds ended hopes of bringing in two Championship players.

“They would have come if we’d been able to do it but we’ve missed out,” he explained.

“It’s disappointing but there will be others over the next week that managers want to get out for some games.

“It’s down to finances, there is no other reason for me not acting.

“They would have been terrific players for us and I’d liked to have strengthened when we were just five points off sixth place.

“Just to freshen up the group and give everyone a real boost.

“But we couldn’t do it so we move on.

“I still think there a couple of positions we could do something in if it is possible and it depends on the next couple of games.”

Davis wants three points out of a difficult double - travelling to second-placed Preston this Saturday before runaway leaders Bristol City on Tuesday.

“It’s a big challenge and I want to go and win,” he added.

“If we win one of those games, the pressure comes off the home game against Oldham next weekend.

“We have to start winning some away games because we can’t expect our home form to be our saviour.

“Wherever we go, we have a chance.

“We haven’t been in good form away and it’s time to change that.

“We owe it to the fans, they travel and pay their money so we have to show effort and quality.

“Preston and Bristol are without doubt the two best sides in the division.

“The players have to have a right go and see what we can bring back.”

George Ray (rib) could be in contention for Preston if he comes through training with no issues and the Railwaymen have no new injury worries.

However, Jon Guthrie is likely to retain his place in Davis' starting line up after impressing in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United.

“George has had a good run and we miss his presence in the air against the bigger teams,” continued Davis.

“But Jon has done well to come in when we needed him.”
