SUPER Ryan Lowe completed a dream comeback for Crewe Alexandra with an injury-time winner at Colchester United.

Rock-bottom Alex looked to be out for the count when they trailed 2-0 early into the second-half on Tuesday night.

But the 37-year-old capped his surprise return on loan from Bury by coming off the bench to supply an assist before his spectacular strike.

Following last Saturday 5-1 thrashing at home to Peterborough, it was a crucial three points for Steve Davis’ men which keeps them in touch of safety.

Alex needed to post a response – and Lowe helped the team to deliver it.

“I’m trying to keep a level head as always but the players will be buzzing after that,” explained the boss.

“From 2-0 down, they showed some real guts and character because it was difficult going in after conceding a goal like that just before half-time despite being the better team.

“We tried to stay positive and although they switched off at the start of the second-half, we went on to dominate.

“We had to ride our luck a little but we defended well and it was nice to score three goals as we haven’t done that very often.

“We showed some terrific spirit and fight and hopefully we can take that on and pick up more results like that.

“I’m getting everything out of the players that I can and I’m delighted at that.”

Scoring 17 goals for Crewe Alex between 2006 and 2008, Lowe’s return raised a few eyebrows just 24 hours before his crucial cameo.

“He’s made the second and scored so you can’t do much better than that,” added Davis.

“What he’s not had lately is a lot of games.

“He has been recovering from injury and he’s only just come back to play 45 minutes of reserve football.

“Half a game was enough for him so we’ll see how he recovers and if we can get him fit and firing.

“If we do, he’ll be a big asset for us.

“He can help on and off the pitch, he’s played at the level and the Championship and another experienced player around the building is good.

“Ryan’s a great lad to have around and help the young players along.”

Lowe is now looking forward to his return to Gresty Road for the Alex clash against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

“It’s a big thing for me to come back here,” Lowe said.

“I’m excited, like a big kid again.

“When I’ve been back to Crewe, I’ve had a bit of stick but it’s been friendly.

“I think they’ll give me a good reception and that is something I will thrive on.

“I am here to do a job and without being big headed, it is what I have done all my life - score goals.”
