Nantwich Town 2 Workington 0

NANTWICH ended a five-match sequence without a victory in the Northern Premier League on Tuesday by beating play-off chasing Workington.

The Dabbers’ play-offs hopes are over, but they damaged their opponents’ chances of securing a top-five place this season.

Phil Parkinson’s side led at half-time through Liam Shotton’s goal.

Josh Hancock then doubled the lead after the break as Nantwich closed a gap to their opponents in the Premier Division table.

The hosts started brightly, and Shotton created an opportunity for himself in the early stages only to be denied by Workington keeper Jonny Jamieson.

Hancock then saw an effort cleared off the line as the Dabbers turned up the heat and they finally managed the breach the Workington defence before the break.

Jamieson came out to meet Shotton as he advanced on goal, but he failed to collect the ball and left the striker with the simple task of tapping into an empty net.

After an uneventful start to the second period, Hancock lit the game up with a bit of individual quality.

After picking the ball up on the edge of the box, he turned excellently before producing a superb curling finish from 20 yards.

Gordon had a golden chance to further increase the lead after he managed to get the ball around Jamieson, but defender Sam Smith made up ground to clear.

James Bailie was having an imperious game in defence, but he also came close to scoring with a rasping 20-yard effort that was blocked by a defender.

The Dabbers closed out the win comfortably to secure an important win to keep their season alive.

They now face a tricky trip to promotion-chasing Salford City on Saturday.
