CREWE Alexandra boss Steve Davis has hinted at a change of system as his side’s pre-season campaign moves towards its conclusion.

The Alex have stuck with a 4-4-2 formation for most of their friendly outings so far, with new strikers Ryan Lowe and Chris Dagnall both impressing in the process.

However, with the League Two opener against Stevenage now just over a week away, Davis says the tactics are open to change.

“We have stuck to one system so far to make sure that everyone knew what their jobs were,” he said.

“They have known exactly what they have do in the system and we have been working hard on being out of possession just as much as in it.

“They know what is required from them when we play 4-4-2 but that doesn’t mean we won’t change it and play with a different shape.

“We have played with two wingers in pre-season and two in midfield but we may look at different systems that we will use throughout the season.”

Following two 1-1 draws in their most recent friendlies, on Friday night at home to Bolton and away to Altrincham on Tuesday, the Railwaymen have three pre-season games remaining before travelling to Hertfordshire next Saturday, August 6.

After last night’s, Wednesday, game against Hendersford, they travel to Lincoln City on Saturday before a game at Kirby Muxloe on Monday night.

One player who has earned praise is defender Jon Guthrie, who won last season’s Player’s Player of the Season award.

Davis says Guthrie has set an example for others to follow.

“He performed to a really high level and was one of our better players throughout the season,” he said.

“After the end of the season, I said to him that he didn’t need to go away for six weeks and do nothing and to his great credit he had his short holiday and was then back in here working on his fitness and conditioning.

“I’ve said to him that he can become a bit tougher and more vocal but he has taken that on board and is trying to add that side of it to his game.

“He has been an example to the others and because of his great fitness levels, he has been able to get the most 90 minutes under his belt.”
