CREWE Alex start a new season in Football League Two at Stevenage this weekend on the back of far from ideal preparations.

With only two recognised experienced midfield options available, a lack of goals in pre-season and a 3-0 loss at non-league Lincoln City, manager Steve Davis has his work cut out guiding The Railwaymen to the positive start sought after last season’s relegation.

But, with the phrase “It’ll be alright on the night” illuminating the most optimistic Alex supporters, Davis is confident his men can do the job at the Lamex Stadium on Saturday.

His belief is built on the work his players have got through behind the scenes.

Davis told crewealex.net: “Our group have a great spirit and there is no reason why we cannot go there and get a result.

“We are all looking forward to it. There is always a lot placed on the opening game of the season but we will be ready.”

Strong at the back, Stevenage could be difficult to break down for an Alex side that has scored only twice in the senior side’s last four friendlies.

“They have a lot of experience and it will be a tough game but it is a new start for us and we want to start with a good result and a good performance,” said Davis, who is missing the services of midfielders Liam Smith (bruised ankle) and youngster Ryan Wintle (illness).

He may move Ollie Turton into midfield with Billy Bingham and James Jones, hinting at such after moving him there for the second half against The Imps on Saturday.

The search continues for another midfielder before the transfer window closes at the end of August, while it is hoped Smith will be available again at the start of September.

Davis says his main aim this season is to create a winning mentality as they aim to put last term’s poor outcome behind them.

“We are looking for a good start and I know every manager will be saying the same thing,” said Davis.

“You crave a positive start because you know what it can do to the group in terms of momentum and confidence.

“You can do it the other way round; when we were promoted from this league back in 2012, the club did not start well and we only began picking up in November and December.

“We went on a great run in the second half of the season, but like I’ve said you prefer to start well and build from there.

“Everybody here is after a much better season after what happened last year.

“It’s crucial we stop the run of poor results.

“We lost too many games last season and got used to it.

“The most important thing to do is stop the run of defeats and then our league position should look after itself.”
